The Flies (French: Les Mouches) is a play by Jean-Paul Sartre, written in It is an adaptation of the Electra myth, previously used by the Greek playwrights Sophocles, Aeschylus and play recounts the story of Orestes and his sister Electra in their quest to avenge the death of their father Agamemnon, king of Argos, by killing their mother Clytemnestra and her husband. Jean-Paul Sartre uses his play No Exit to explore many of the existentialist themes discussed in his philosophical treatise Being and prominently, No Exit focuses on the ideas of competitive subjectivity, the look and others, objectification, and bad faith. One of the characters in this play – Inez Serrano – comes close to having the perspective of an existentialist, maybe.

By Jean- Paul Sartre. English versions by Stuart Gilbert. pp. New York: Alfred A. Knopf. $

His first play, The Flies (), was produced during the German occupation, despite its underlying message of defiance. One of his most popular plays is the one-act No Exit (), in which the traditional theological concept of hell is redefined in existentialist terms.4/5(12). The Flies is Sartre's first play, written a year before No Exit, and it gave him his first popular opportunity, via the stage, to communicate his ideas to large groups of people who ordinarily might not have read his other works. This, for Sartre, was the best feature of the theater: It was a tremendous forum for disseminating his thoughts.

My favorite play in this collection, by far, is Dirty Hands. It's about a man named Hugo who joined the Proletariat Party in Illyria and is assigned to the party's newsletter/5.

This is the atmosphere in No Exit, where all three characters have died and are condemned to the unmalleable truth of their past actions. Contrary to the situation in The Flies, this play shows what happens when people do not choose properly. In The Flies, we witness the results of correct, as well as incorrect, choices.

Sartre use of the word "play-acting" also recalls the artificial setting of the play itself: no matter what the characters do, they are still actors and actresses who are "lying" to each other. There is "no exit" from self-deception.

The relationship between existence and essence is also a major theme in this section. No Exit quizzes about important details and events in every section of the book.
